Major Airports
In a country so large as Australia there needs to be good air links between all the cities and towns. In this respect there are plenty of small and medium airports catering for the smaller communities. For the international traveller there are about five major airports.
The most commonly used is Sydney, as it has the biggest population and is regarded as the place to begin a tour of Australia. Some 30 million passengers use the airport known as Kingsford Smith Airport, so it’s busy all the time.
Another one of the major airports in Australia is Melbourne, but considering the significance of the location, the airport is quite small. There are direct international flights to SE Asia, Europe and the Middle East from Melbourne, and a list of the routes is available at travelsydney.co.uk.
After these two, the remaining locations for the busiest airports are in Brisbane, Perth and Cairns. These are the busiest of the Australian major airports, but Adelaide and Darwin also have large passenger traffic. Perth has developed with some of the lower cost airlines using it for links to Singapore, Hong Kong and Manila.
Although Perth is not the largest in terms of passengers the location makes it a good stepping off point for trips around the country. There are also very good domestic routes to the main cities using the lower cost airlines of Tiger, Jetstar and Virgin Blue. travelsydney.co.uk has some information on the various airlines operating from each of the major airports of Australia.
