Sydney Sports Guide

Called the biggest event in the world, the Olympic Games was hosted in Sydney in 2000, using a lot of the existing sports facilities as well as creating many more new ones. For the residents of the city this has proved to be a wonderful opportunity to further develop the sporting prowess of the city, offering excellent training facilities and hopefully creating Olympic stars of the future. The Australians take their sport seriously and it will be no surprise to see many young athletes in future years leading from the front, proud to represent their country.

One of the biggest sports in Australia is cricket, and the famous Ashes that are competed for against the English national side will be back in Sydney early in 2007, as the Fifth Test is being held here. Tickets are already sold out for what is likely to be a fiery encounter between these two sides, the English looking to retain the prize they won from the Australians in England last Summer and the Aussies seeking to make up for theat defeat, with a home soil advantage expected to make for a thrilling encounter.

The other major sport in Australia is rugby, and it is fitting that the Australian Rugby League headquarters is here in Sydney. Such is the strength of the city in the sport that eight of the fifteen National Rugby League sides are from Sydney and it's surrounding areas.
